“Harbour Town Lighthouse
Hilton Head Island is named after captain William Hilton who landed here in 1663. The island is 7 miles wide, 14 miles long and is the largest barrier island on the eastcoast.
One of the Island’s most popular landmarks is The Harbour Town Lighthouse.
The 90′ lighthouse was built in 1969. This familiar structure is still a museum full of facts about our area.
We hope this custom ornament adds the perfect memory to your tree.”
The Island’s best known and best loved landmark, the Harbour Town Lighthouse has been welcoming visitors to Hilton Head for over four decades. The red-and-white-striped Harbour Town Lighthouse serves not only as a beacon to the many ships that reside in our Yacht Basin but also as a landmark that has come to symbolize Hilton Head Island to people all over the world. Construction began in 1969 and was complete in the spring of 1970. Sea Pines founder Charles Fraser wanted the lighthouse to be a symbol of the island. The original idea was to have a big clock tower, but then in discussions with other young executives in the Sea Pines Company it emerged that it would be a lot more interesting to have a lighthouse, said Porter Thompson, who worked as Fraser’s communications assistant and has lived on Hilton Head for 39 years. Initially the lighthouse wasn’t going to be red and white. An original idea presented to Fraser was for each side of the lighthouse to be a different scene of sea life, ranging from scurrying crabs to leaping dolphins. Fraser thought the colorful images brought to mind cheesy tourist traps in Florida, not the upscale resort feel he had in mind for the island.
Now you can enjoy the Harbour Town Lighthouse during the holidays with this beautiful ornament!
The top of the lighthouse is glazed with glitter, as well as the front lawn. This ornament is perfect for the holidays!
