Nancy Mitchell

Born in Westfield, New Jersey, Nancy was encouraged by her family at an early age to develop her talent for painting. At the age of 11 Nancy took private lessons and at 16 she was studying painting full time at a local college with New York artist George Hildrew.

During her childhood, the Mitchell family often visited Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. It was the beauty and warmth of the Lowcountry that prompted Nancy to make a permanent move to the Island at the age of 21.

After earning her Associates Degree in art from Stratford Art School, Nancy began studying with renowned artist Leon Stacks and would soon manage his gallery, Colorworks.

In 1993, Mitchell held her first one-woman show, funded in part by a Hilton Head Island Cultural Council Award. Later, Mitchell began to study with Charleston portrait and landscape painter Martin Ahrens, learning the mechanics of the rich and vibrant works in oils.

Mitchell’s commissioned landscapes and portraits are found in many private and public collections. In addition to traditional pieces, Mitchell has done numerous murals as well as faux finishes for private homes and Lowcountry area businesses.

Upon successful completion of a 10’ x 50’ mural at the Hyatt Regency in Savannah, Georgia, Mitchell released assigned and numbered limited edition print of this beautiful city. Best described as a “veritable feast of Savannah” – four Savannah scenes are depicted intertwined by local flora and fauna. These prints are available for purchase.

Nancy has just finished a signed and numbered limited edition print of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and prints of additional cities in all 50 states are in progress.
